- PendingW/26/1176/LBIt?s proposed that the paint be removed from the timber to expose all areas of filler and allow the frame to breathe and damp areas to dry out. The filler and silicon sealant found would be removed, along with rotten timber, and repairs carried out. This will prevent further deterioration due to trapped water within the timber, and allow the frame to continue to support the house for the future. Paint removal would be achieved by expert operators using Microstrip ? a variety of media in compressed air but at pressures as low as ½ bar or 7 psi. This low pressure combined with finely adjustable medium levels allows vulnerable surfaces to be cleaned without damage. This would conserve any features such as saw marks, carpenters? marks and witches? marks. Indeed it may reveal some of these features which have been concealed by thick paint Timber repairs would be done by cutting away the face of external timbers to a depth not exceeding 75mm to remove decay and expose sound timber. These areas would be replaced with air-dried oak sections fixed with stainless steel coach screws. The heads of the screws will be set into the new sections and concealed with oak plugs. The pointing between the new timbers and existing brickwork will be made good with lime mortar. The only removal of timber will be that which is necessary to facilitate the repair in order to retain sufficient structural integrity and prevent further deterioration of the frame.
